As a classically trained orator and philosopher he is widely considered the most accomplished rhetorical stylist of his era. He is revered as one of the Three Holy Hierarchs, along with Basil the Great and John Chrysostom. His defense of the doctrine of the Trinity made him one of the greatest champions of orthodoxy against Arianism.
