Our Mission

Toward Franciscan unity

KenNancyPatrick

TSSF, OEF, and SFO leaders

The Prelude to the General Rule of the OEF says, in part: "We shall strive to be living witnesses among all nations to the great truth that in Christ "there is no difference between Jews and Gentiles, between slaves and freemen, between men and women" (Galatians 3:28); that there are no barriers of race or nations in God's family. There is only the All-loving Creator, the Divine Redeemer, the one fellowship in the All-Wonderful Comforter."

That principle of "no barriers" suggests a oneness which we do not yet see in Creation. We believe that the Church in general, and this Order in particular, are called to bear witness to the unity of God's family, beginning within the household of the Church and reaching out across to people of all faiths.

JPIC working group

The OEF has a working group on Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC). This working group focuses on:

  • collaboration with the Franciscan Action Network, a national network of Franciscans throughout the U.S. working on JPIC issues,
  • supporting and affirming the JPIC work of members of the OEF in their own local communities,
  • identifying an annual collaborative project that the OEF will support, and
  • coordinating a monthly JPIC fast focused on JPIC areas of concern.

OEF JPIC MINISTRY

Sisters and Brothers:

We had some absolutely wonderful discussions at chapter/convocation this year regarding the ministry of Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation.  Out of these discussion emerged a renewed emphasis and rededication to JPIC ministry.

In an effort to help us define what JPIC is and what it is not, we (Bro. Craig Robert Miller and Sr. Katie Cook) your co-animators for JPIC ministry, wish to make some suggestions as to how you can become involved as Franciscans who are committed to work in the areas of social, political, and economic justice, world peace, and environmental justice.

Principle of the day
8. Christ chose for himself a poor and humble life, even though he valued created things attentively and lovingly. Let the Order of Ecumenical Franciscans seek a proper spirit of detachment from temporal goods by simplifying our own material needs. Let us be mindful that according to the gospel we are stewards of the goods received for the benefit of God's children. We shall strive to purify our hearts from every tendency and yearning for possession and power.
